    Oyster Reef Restoration - May 12, 2012

Nearly 25 volunteers from the UCF Alumni Association's Community Volunteer Chapter and the Space Coast Chapter along with UCF undergraduate and graduate students joined on an oyster restoration project at Canaveral National Seashore in Volusia County. The project was started in 2005 by UCF professor, Dr. Linda Walters, Ph.D. and is in conjunction with the Brevard Zoo and the Nature Conservancy's ongoing efforts to help restore oyster reefs in both the Indian River Lagoon and Canaveral national Seashore ecosystems. The oyster mats, constructed from mesh and oyster shells, were placed in the water to provide a natural substrate for oyster larvae to settle. Volunteers worked on the project's 51st reef, which has been named "UKnighted."

Habitat for Humanity Project Recap - March 10, 2012

Stag Horn Villas are almost complete, thanks to years of volunteer hours provided by the UCF Alumni Community Volunteers Chapter and many other local businesses. Nearly 20 alumni joined with volunteers from Bank of America to help put up walls on the second story of five town homes. Volunteers used power saws and nail guns, and lots of hammers and nails to get the exterior walls in place. Click on the photo to the left to see the progress our group made.

Slightly over 50 alumni and friends participated in activities that included reorganizing the warehouse and storage room, sprucing up the Seed Boutique, cleaning the facility, and sorting the donations intake area. There was plenty to do and wouldn't have been possible without the support of so many. Great job, Knights!
