What's new for CECS Alumni?

CECS Alumni to be featured on ABC's, "Shark Tank"

Shark_Tank_Phil_Dumas_headshot

Phil Dumas, a UCF College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) alum (BS, EE, ’05), beat out more than 24,000 applicants for the opportunity to compete on the ABC reality show, "Shark Tank."

Dumas is president of Unikey Technologies, makers of a Smartphone application-based entry system for the home. The product allows a resident to simply touch their door to enter their home -– no key is required –- as long as they have their Smartphone with the Unikey application in their pocket or purse. The product experience is based on today's keyless entry systems on automobiles, where one can access their car without using a key or pushing a button. As long as the key fob is on them, they simply touch the handle and the car unlocks.

Dumas credits his college experience in CECS for the foundation and inspiration that led to his business idea. "My senior design project at UCF was a system that opened a car door using a cell phone," Dumas said. "You called your car, entered in your password and the doors unlocked."

Will the Shark Tank judges bite? Find out by watching the series, which airs Fridays, at 8 p.m. Eastern, on ABC. The air date of the episode featuring Unikey Technologies is May 18.

CECS Alumni Chapter volunteer awarded Volunteer of the Year

Herb_Award

For the fifth year, the UCF Alumni Association hosted its annual Jefferson Awards Reception, which recognizes the association’s most active volunteers for their countless acts of generosity and numerous volunteer hours. Hosted by the UCF Alumni Community Volunteers Chapter and sponsored by the UCF Division of Community Relations, the awards focus on public service and the importance of giving back.

This year's College Chapter Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to CECS alumnus, Herb Gingold, '91. Herb's work on the CECS Alumni Chapter's golf tournament as well as his time volunteering as a Senior Design mentor made Herb a perfect candidate for the award.  Congratulations, Herb and thank you for your outstanding work on behalf of our students and alumni!

 CECS Alumni Chapter Golf Tournament!

UCF Today on CECS

  • National Thumbs-Up for Engineering’s Academic Alert Program
Financial worries, a relationship breakup, feeling homesick or not seeing eye-to-eye with a professor are just some of the many factors that can cause a student’s GPA to slide downward. To help these students, the academic advisors in UCF’s College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) developed Academic Alert, an intervention program that has caught [...]

Students and alumni from the University of Central Florida have earned more than $1 million from the National Science Foundation to support their pursuits of advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. Ten UCF students and graduates were named recipients of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships, which support outstanding graduate [...]
  • Researchers, Artists Expand Horizons in UCF Project
Some view science and art as heading in opposite directions. But many University of Central Florida research and art students say the two fields are complementary and have come together in a project that “is creating synergies that weren’t there before,” said Michael Georgiopoulos, interim assistant vice president for research and commercialization. Georgiopoulos, also a [...]
  • Major Federal Grant for UCF Transportation Experts
University of Central Florida transportation experts –- led by civil engineering professor Essam Radwan -– are part of a team that has been awarded $3.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to establish a Southeast-based university research center to study the nation’s transportation needs and provide hard data to improve transportation systems across the country. The [...]
