Remembering Dr. Charles Millican

Dr. Charles N. Millican, the university's founding president, died Dec. 1 at his Central Florida home. That day marked the 45th anniversary of his appointment as president of Florida Technological University, which would later become UCF. On Dec. 13, hundreds of admirers gathered inside the Student Union to celebrate Dr. Millican's life and legacy.

In what Dr. Millican said was one of the proudest moments of his life, he received the Champion's Award from the Alumni Association at the annual Black and Gold Gala on October 22, 2010. The highlights of his gracious and moving acceptance remarks during his last public appearance can be viewed here.

Dr. Millican's legacy will live on in many ways, and a special "Remembering Charlie" website has been created for viewers to enjoy, remember, post comments or make donations to his preferred charity — the UCF Women's Club First Ladies' Graduate Scholarship Fund.

I remember Dr. Millican from when I was a freshman (1970)at FTU. I recall that one night my brother was supposed to pick me up at the adm building, but he was very late. I was sitting most likely looking distressed, whne dr. Millican came up to me and asked what was the matter. After I explained, he offered to take me up to his offic so I could call home to see what was the hold up. That was very kind of him and I will always remember this small event. I had a great experience at the university and I have always felt his influence creat3d the culture that lives on today. He will be missed. Dr. Ron Hirst, (1974,1978,1985)
